A Sprinkler Save in Harrisonburg This Morning! At approximately 2:00 a.m. HFD firefighters responded to a possible structure fire involving a kitchen stove on Meridian Circle. Upon arrival they found that the sprinkler system had activated and contained the fire to the area of the stove. The resident stated he had thrown water on the oil in the attempt to extinguish the flames. This resulted in flame spread to other combustible materials at which time the automatic sprinkler system activated and contained the fire. Damage to the apartment is estimated at $5,000. Never through water on a grease fire. Try to extinguish by placing the lid on the pan. If the fire does not extinguish, leave the building and call 911. In this fire the automatic sprinkler system did its job of containing the fire to the area of the stove. Without sprinklers this fire could have spread quickly and caused extensive damage throughout the apartment complex.
