A cover design before even 20 pages are written? Not only that, - TopicsExpress

A cover design before even 20 pages are written? Not only that, but theme music, too? Yup. First, I enjoy the artistic challenge of cover design; since I’ve gone indie, I’ve done all my own cover designs. I’ve found that if I have a solid sense of the story as expressed in both image and music, it helps me establish and maintain the feeling and atmosphere of the story, which, in turn, has an effect on everything all the way from the overall arc of the story down to choices of simile and metaphor and even all the way down to the smallest detail of word choice. In short, it helps me get inside the story … to live it. And nothing expresses the feeling of this particular story better than the posture of the soldier (rights to the image were more pricey than usual, so I hope this design survives!) and this very brief section of Amy Beach’s Quintet. (I thank Mark Dunn, an excellent writer, for reminding me of this wonderful, sometimes overlooked, composer.)
