A diplomat does not turn to his people and tells them how much sympathy he has for them. A middleman turns in favour of the person who gives him a better deal , and then addresses the less advantaged side as to how much sympathy he has has for them. Diplomacy and Middleman jobs are similar to an extent that in both one has to walk along to incompatible ideas. But then the differences too hold out - however small and fine it may be.
