A double fist block, to the leg when it is coming at you for a - TopicsExpress

A double fist block, to the leg when it is coming at you for a full force kick. Hmmmm....... I have some issues with this. (This comment is a mistake: First, if this is Isshinryu is there a reason why the thumb is not in the proper position? Is it because for this particular technique it has some other purpose for being off the mark?) Second, this is not the bunkai I would attach to this double fist block or strike. Since I feel, in self-defense terms, that this technique is, in this instance, better served when you are within grappling distance so you can strike down in this manner into the stomach/intestinal area. A real show stopper that is because of the double fist, the angle downward to overcome the bodies natural ability to harden and resist damage and finally it is in a softer target area because you just dont want to use knuckles against bone especially if the attacker toughens the shin, etc. It is well known in both street and dojo circles that there is a rule or principle that should not be broken especially in self-defense, i.e. the hard-to-soft/soft-to-hard rule. This is a hard to hard contact application and in the street you can count on that breaking something in your hands. As a traditional karate study of the way as in philosophical with emphasis on better person, better health, better fitness, etc. and as a study of the bunkai it is a good thing to learn and do BUT If you intend it for either self-defense and/or combatives you need to rethink that one because the last thing you need in the fight is damage to your hands, etc. It is also wise to understand that in self-defense/fighting/combatives you want to end it very, very fast. This technique is a good study and may be ok for drills but not good to get the job done very, very fast. I recommend reading Marc MacYoungs book, Taking It to the Street: Making Your Martial Art Street Effective, then add in for good measure his book, In The Name of Self-Defense. There are a couple of other books from Rory Miller on Violence that also are necessary supplements to Mr. MacYoungs books so go for those too. Anyway, one of the goals for Marcs efforts is to get martial artists to take a closer look at what they are doing if they are training toward either or self-defense, fighting and/or combatives in martial arts. Because, truthfully, mostly martial arts in the west are fundamentally sport and watered down educational institute implemented karate, not self-defense, fighting or even combatives. It is bases solely and exclusively on competitive contest oriented sparring. Boy, that last para will get some raised hairs and ruffled feathers from many who are deluding themselves into thinking what they do is what they do. Yes, a lot can be connected and used for fighting, combatives and even self-defense but mostly, as some expert mentioned, the stuff they think translates to the other are the wrong things. Like, in my perceptions and perspective, this double leg block. Ok, let the flame wars begin!!!!
