A few days ago I wrote about unfriending somebody because they suggested I try to “pray the gay away”. I’d like to say something now about being gay. I am very happy to be gay. One of the strongest reasons I am happy to be gay is because it allow me the freedom to be creative without any parameters. My mother was always afraid of what other people would think, especially strangers, if they were to know some truth about our family. She was petrified that somebody would pass judgment on her or our family for somehow being different. I believe my acceptance in myself as a gay man frees me up from any fear that somebody would in some way judge me as not being “a man” because I create in a number of ways; spinning, weaving, knitting, composing, doing calligraphy, and many other creative tasks. If I were to worry that somebody might think that I’m gay and should be ashamed of it, I wouldn’t feel free enough to create. But as it is just another quality of my being, knowing that there is nothing to be ashamed of, then I don’t have to restrain myself in any way creatively. I don’t have to worry about knitting in public because I am proud of my ability to create with yarn. And if the worse thing that somebody can do is think that I am gay, then it doesn’t affect me in the least and it doesn’t prevent me from creating and following my imagination, no matter where it leads.
