A few folks have asked me how I found my female patriot ancestor - TopicsExpress

A few folks have asked me how I found my female patriot ancestor for the UDC. The answer – Fold3! The Citizen Files contain receipts for payments and other matters to citizens by the Confederate officials. I found that my great-great-great-grandmother Smith in Cornersville, Tennessee, sold corn to the Confederates. That receipt allowed me to have an approved supplemental for “Material Aid to the Confederacy.” Just yesterday, I found a gr-gr-gr-grandfather who hauled guns for the Confederate army from Raleigh, NC, throughout the South. Another line will be underway soon! So, you would like to find out some info?? Do it NOW! Fold3 has free access to their Civil War files for all of April (yes, I know many prefer WBTS, but Fold3 calls it Civil War and I want you to find the right links!). So go there and hunt for the next two weeks free of charge. You can print the items easily. Be sure to print the information page – it has the file numbers you need to include on the UDC forms. How to use Fold3 to track down non-military documents: 1. Go to the url fold3 2. Scroll down to “Records by War” 3. Select “Civil War” 4. Browse “All Civil War Titles” 5. Scroll to find “Confederate Citizens Files” 6. There are two categories: Business & Citizen 7. Select “Citizen” 8. There is a section for the first letter of the last name 9. Then within that you will select the second letter of the first name 10. At this point, it is a matter of going name by name to find your ancestor 11. You may find multiples of the same name. At this point, you have to look at each one to see location. It is finding needles in haystacks. But some of the finds are fantastic!
