A personal hero of mine, a superior woman of power and strength at 70 Australias Master RKC and elite trainer, mentor and colleague Andrew Read....A MUST SHARE STORY!!! As followers of RPT know my mother competed in the CAPO Powerlifting National Titles on the weekend. It captures attention because its unusual for a 70 year old woman to still want to be strong and work at it. But for me, having been there with her, from going to the airport, arriving at the venue to weigh in the night before, then trying to get some sleep, and then a nervous breakfast and off to the comp itself it was far more impressive. How many of us hold back on something we really want to do out of fear of the unknown? How many never attempt something that burns inside them? I knew my mother was nervous by how quiet she was. When she wanted some noise and conversation I joined in, but I also held back and let her be inside her own bubble and focus when she felt she had to. I shouldnt have been surprised. This is a woman I bought a bungee jump for on her 50th birthday and she did that with only the smallest hesitation. This is the same woman who risked getting shot when we lived in Ethiopia to get between a big shot General and me after I had gotten into a fight with his son (bearing in mind I was in Grade 2 so I was tiny). She got her nose broken in that brawl but she never took one step back. A life well lived has nothing to do with how many toys you have, but in how you continue to challenge yourself. A warrior spirit is one that never rests, never thinks, Im good enough but always tries to push in some small way another inch forward. Theres probably a good reason why nearly ever girl Ive ever dated has been terrified of my mother. Shes a warrior through and through. But its been a lifelong process for her to develop that mental toughness, and Im glad to see her make efforts to keep the sword sharp still. The title was nice, but it cant beat self-respect. Age is just a number!
