A quarter of children in the UK have already been stung by the 2014 sun - thats before breaking up for their summer holidays, according to a new survey by Boots UK that has been published in The Telegraph. That means one in four children has permanently damaged their skin - something half of those surveyed didnt realise (a quarter of a persons lifetime sun exposure is acquired before the age of 18). 42 per cent of the 500 UK parents who took part in the survey admitted that their child under 10 had at one time been sunburnt. The Food Doctor says making some positive lifestyle and dietary changes can help to protect your childrens skin and reduce future sun damage • Always wear an SPF cream even during the cooler months and make sure you use a high factor SPF across the summer. • Stay out of the sun between 12-3pm this is when the sun can do the most damage to your skin • Cut back on high fat dairy products by limiting consumption of cheese, cream, ice cream and whole milk • Increase the intake of lycopene a powerful skin healing antioxidant found in great concentration in tomato puree • Eat a rainbow of different coloured vegetable everyday to boost antioxidant levels and help to protect cells from detrimental changes • Eat a portion of nuts and seeds daily, which are high in vitamin E, another skin food nutrient • Finally, top up on carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, pumpkins and squashes which all contain beta-carotene a nutrient which your body can convert into vitamin A, known to protect skin cells from the harmful effects of sun damage.
