A special morning today in the citrus grove at Washington Oaks, State Garden near St. Augustine, FL. The air was heavy with the fragrance of orange blossoms and the buzz of pollinator wings. The diversity of pollinators surprised me: honey bees, bee flies, bumblebees, butterflies, skippers and birds. A wave of migrating male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds was passing through, as were Palm Warblers. Individual birds claimed a cluster of trees and chased other away. Pollen coated the beaks of the greediest.
