A statement from Dr. Ulrike Thiel addressing her motivation for publishing SRS photos from 2008. Facebook has not copied the tekst here it is: I did not expect such explosive reactions to my last post publishing photographs I took some years ago from the training of the Spanish riding school . I feel to have to give some more information as I dont want to open doors for misinterpretation as a consequence of the explosive sharing in social networks. My motivation is: I am a great “fan” of the classical riding culture as it was (till some time ago) kept very much alive at the Spanish Riding School and I am very concerned with the development the training there has undergone within the past years. There is enough evidence for a schooled eye to see the consequences of the introduction of the LDR (hyperflexion) Trainings method in the way some horses of the SRS are moving (biomechanics) , behaving and their body-expression. It has been proved that this method is not only destructing the biomechanics of correct gates but also inflicting the psychological AND physiological wellbeing of the horse. I am planning to give a longer statement with “ins and outs” later on facebook. Meanwhile I want to rectify some points: 1 The photos I published where stored on my server in 2010 but where taken in may 2008 from the cafeteria of the SRS 2 They where no undercover photo’s, as you are allowed to take pictures there, which is not the case in the indoor arena. 3 My intention was to take nice photos of good riding to use them for my students to show them that good classical and horse friendly riding still can be seen at the SRS in Vienna. 4 I was shocked when I saw (between correct riding riders) some of the riders riding in LDR position and others also using extra (not classical an horsefriendly) techniques well known from bad sport riders. I knew from my observations of the morning work at the SRS years ago that normally the Oberbereiter from the sideline would correct this riding immediately. This did not happen. 5 My concern was not only based on these photos and observations I then followed not only this training but some other trainings and shows in may and juni 2008 and saw still correct riding and moving horses but as well bad to worse hyperflexion techniques. 6 I talked with colleagues of the Xenophon society and other friends and colleaques about my observations and concern and showed them the pictures and learned from them that they had made the same observations. I handed them over to Georg Wahl and Christine Stücklberger who where connected closely to the SRS Förderverein and they showed them to Mrs Gürtler and talked with her about the problem of not classical and horse unfriendly riding being observerd by more people and the possible consequences for the SRS.. 7 Visiting trainings and show in 2009, 2010 2012 and 2013 I saw more and more hyperflexion riding and also the consequences of this technique on more horses in the shows. 8 I also watched actual videos (some even produced by SRS) were you can see more and more horses showing the typical consequences of the hyperflexion trainings technique. (some links to recent photos published on internet see below) All this together with the refusal of the SRS to think over their new alliance with A.v Grunsven and the consequences of this alliance in public and for the development of classical riding and horsefriendly training methods in sport, leisure and the SRS made me publish the photos and my concern via facebook in the hope that discussion and reactions of the big group of classical riders, who are sharing my concern could help to make the SRS change the development of the last years and come back to horsefriendly and classical trainings methods as kept there sinds more than 500 years. ~~ Dr. Ulrike Thiel Here some recent publications of photos of the SRS from 2014 on internet: hippocampus-nl/page/links-SRS to be reached via a page on mu HP as facebook denies to publish the links directly
