A subject matter close to my heart (and head). I coached for 15 - TopicsExpress

A subject matter close to my heart (and head). I coached for 15 very good years and during that time, even, heading came up as a potentially harmful act. I was advised (and in this piece it appears Chastain was too), that if you taught the players the proper way to head the ball it would not be a problem: to wit, do not strike the ball with the top of your head, but rather at that point where your forehead meets your hairline, for want of a better phrase at this point. Of course, in a game situation, that becomes rather moot. I can testify that in one series of three consecutive ladies high school games I saw three ladies being wheeled off on golf carts, clearly unaware of their surroundings, although, as I recall, these were all the result of the much more insidious head-to-head blows. But: I can appreciate making heading an age-appropriate part of the game. What age? I dont know. Even so, the dude they have on near the end of this flick, who suggests keeping kids out of the game entirely, well, I think hes being a bit reactionary. More than a bit.
