A true Backroom Kuala Lumpur story... In 1999, Jody Foster was filming the movie Anna And The King here in Malaysia, also starring Chow Yun-Fat. Due to the movie depicting a Siamese Emperor and the Thais having very strict laws towards issues regarding their King and royal family, they banned filming in Thailand, hence the filming moving just a little south of the border here in Malaysia- particularly in Penang and Langkawi. Obviously the cast and crew were given a weekend off at some point and must have asked someone where the hottest place was to party in Kuala Lumpur. There would have been only one answer- The Backroom! I remember watching from the DJ booth while Jungle Jerry was spinning with my mouth wide open as (then a virtually unknown actress) Bai Ling from China was at the top of the tallest podium doing the craziest cloud-collecting dance, arms all over the place, wearing the chunkiest pair of platform thigh-high boots you can imagine. Completely oblivious to the delight of all those around her. She was so cool, i liked her instantly! I remember people pointing to Jodie Foster who appeared on the dance floor from time to time. That was actually her body double, but the rumours were that the real Jody Foster was around in some corner, having a jolly good time. Maybe someone can clear that rumour up...I was too busy having a jolly good time myself ;) My mate Sean Ghazi also had a starring role in that movie!
