A warning to Canadians: Do not paint all senators with the same - TopicsExpress

A warning to Canadians: Do not paint all senators with the same brush. That is EXACTLY what Harper wants you to do. He doesnt want you to be upset with his poor judgement in appointments, he wants you to instead be upset with the entire senate as a whole. The senate is vital in our system as a chamber of sober second thought. Without it the Prime Minister would have ultimate power. They carefully examine and study bills to make certain that they are the best they can be and find out how they might affect the daily lives of Canadians. Changes are suggested and sometimes bills are rejected. The Senate is responsible for protecting the rights and interests of Canadians in all regions, especially minority groups or people who do not often get a chance to present their opinions to Parliament. Senators work on committees to investigate important issues, including childrens rights, literacy, poverty and terrorism. They speak on behalf of those whose rights are often overlooked, such as children, veterans, the elderly and the poor. These investigations allow people from all walks of life a chance to give their views on issues that affect them. Each year, Senate committees hear from more than 1000 people or witnesses, hold an average of 400 meetings and produce more than 100 reports. In order to abolish the senate you need to open the constitution and get approval from all the provinces. Opening the constitution right now when Quebec has a separatist government is the most profoundly irresponsible idea imaginable. Can of worms, demands for changes will be made and our country does not need that crap right now! The senate costs a lot less per year than the propaganda advertisements for the Action Plan have cost us. Reforms are great and all expenses definitely need to be completely transparent but lots can be done to improve accountability without foolishly opening the constitution. Remember, there are some exceptional senators out there including Roméo Dallaire. I for one am extremely grateful he is in the senate doing everything he can to protect us all!
