A woman walked around NYC for 10 hours and with the help of a friend, recorded every catcall she received. On Vox (link below) the blog post calls this harassment and says its an example of men asserting their dominance and intimidating women. Please watch the video and see if you agree. Most of the catcalls are friendly greetings on the order of Hi How are you and in only two cases was someone recorded behaving in a way that might be considered creepy, though it wasnt threatening. Im not trying to say that women arent harassed on the streets of New York. But a video that mostly shows seated men calling out, polite, non-threatening greetings doesnt help demonstrate it. What most of them are doing is called flirting. It can be creepy and unwelcome but it isnt men asserting their dominance and intimidating women. Show me a video of men using offensive language or objectifying women, and Ill agree with you every time that its threatening and wrong. Im not defending overt catcalls, or obscene language or anything that objectifies women. But dont show me seated men lazily saying hello and try to pass it off as harassing or intimidating behavior. vox/xpress/2014/10/28/7084995/a-woman-walked-around-new-york-city-for-10-hours-and-filmed-every
