ADMIRALS LOG Periodically, well check in with our fearless Fleet Admiral, David Zoltan, to have a peek into his thoughts on our Beta exploration so far - and where its going next. Beta Expedition Day 83 The winter solstice has passed and the days now grow longer, giving us more time to gather, drink, dine, game, and generally enjoy the geek community of Chicago. At Beta, as always, we’ll be doing our part in the coming days and weeks to ensure that the community has an ideal place for all of those activities. For instance, when 2014 draws to a close on December 31st, we will be hosting Nerd Year’s Eve: A Masquerade Ball. You may notice that this event was previously advertised to include an open bar. It should be noted that the City of Chicago is becoming less friendly to open bar policies, and we wish to be compliant with the law. To make sure you still receive the full value of your admission price, we have dropped the price from $100 to $65. Your admission includes unique, one-time-only passed Companion dishes, open gaming, a drink ticket, as well as a midnight toast. There will also be tremendous prizes for the raffle and cosplay contest. Put on your finest geek attire - be it steampunk, cosplay, or just plain fancy duds - and join us in welcoming the Nerd Year! Just this past week we were thrilled to have so many of you join us for three very special events. First of all, thank you all for packing out the house this past Tuesday as NBC visited Beta to film for an upcoming episode of 1st Look. Watch for the episode to air in early 2015 - perhaps you’ll see yourself on national TV! I’m still glowing from the success of Friday’s Hogwarts Holiday Feast. My thanks to our kitchen staff for producing an astounding and plentiful English feast, as well as to everyone who filled our Great Hall with wizardry and revelry. Congratulations to both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw for being the co-winners of our house competition, earning the right to have their banners adorn our walls for the coming year. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all the good gentlefolk who came this past Saturday adorned in their most unique finery for our first Steampunk Tea Time. Many tea-infused cocktails were imbibed, biscuits were devoured (politely), and new alliances were made. 2014 provides us with still more opportunities to gather and commiserate, and this week alone presents several chances. Tonight, join us for a Festivus Ugly Sweater Party! Wear your tackiest holiday offering, and receive 10% off your bill. In addition, to celebrate the reopening of the nearby Damen Blue Line station, show your Ventra card for a free item from our Geek Retreat menu! Friday, don’t bother getting gussied up before leaving the house and enjoy your holiday a little longer: we’ll be having a Play with Your Toys Pajama Party! Stay in your comfy clothes, bring in and play with your newest toys, and enjoy our brunch menu the entire night. Everyone who brings in their new toy will be entered into a raffle drawing at 9 PM. Sunday brings two fantastic Chicago-born gaming opportunities, starting at noon with a Knock Down Barns tournament. Come play the game that the Chicago Reader calls “Jenga meets Battleship meets dodgeball”, and if you win the tourney you receive a copy of the game! At 3 PM, join Chicago Game Lovers at Beta for the new classic, Cards Against Humanity. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with fellow gaming geeks from the Chicago community. As always, we like to lend our support to other exciting events and opportunities in the Chicago geek community. This Saturday, visit Chicagoland Games: The Dice Dojo for a Warhammer 40K tournament, starting at 10 AM. That night at 9:30 PM, join Annoyance Theatre & Bar for an all new stylized moral parable in “Improvised Twilight Zone.” If you wish to see your obsession on film, try Music Box Theatre for “A Very Kubrick Christmas” - 10 days of nearly all of Stanley Kubrick’s movies from 35mm prints, starting Christmas Day with Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining! While Beta may be closed this Wednesday and Thursday so that we may be with friends and loved-ones, there are many opportunities ahead of us to come together as one community and celebrate our good fortune. We have a truly rare geek community here in Chicago, and I am truly thankful for that. So say we all.
