ALLY McCOIST was thrilled with his side’s battling qualities as it worked hard to earn a good 3-0 victory against Queen of the South in the last eight of the Ramsdens Cup. Rangers took an early lead at Palmerston Park through Bilel Mohsni but had to wait until the last 15 minutes to seal their victory through Jon Daly and Lee McCulloch. Queens certainly asked questions of the visitors and they answered them well with a solid performance both defensively and on the counter. McCoist wasn’t totally satisfied with some aspects of his side’s play but there was no denying his delight at the way they dug in to secure a merited success. He said: “Understandably, they handled the surface a lot better than we did and it seemed a little bit skiddy. I don’t think we ever looked 100 per cent comfortable with it. “That said, we knew it was going to be an extremely difficult game. Queens have knocked out teams from the top flight here already this year and last year too. “They’re really comfortable at home so we think this is a fantastic result. We looked a real threat at times. “Queens certainly put us under a little bit of pressure but we’ve also had chances and I thought we were very resilient. “We can certainly pass the ball better and we will but I thought we were pretty solid and we had a real desire to get a result which was extremely pleasing.” Rangers have now won their last seven matches, scoring an average of exactly four per game and conceding only two in the sequence. Those statistics are impressive and lend weight to the argument they’re much more ruthless already this term with key players still building match fitness. Annan, Raith and Stenhousemuir are the sides in contention to face Gers in the semi-finals and the draw for that stage of the tournament on Thursday afternoon. Whoever lands the Ibrox outfit will be in for a tough time, with confidence undoubtedly rising among McCoist’s pool. He added: “We look as though we’ve got goals in the team, which you obviously need to win games. “Equally, I think we have to start getting solidity at the back and we’ve a long way to go but we seem to be getting towards having a real pride in keeping clean sheets. “We’ve got six goals from our centre-halves in our last two games and that’s fantastic. Long may that continue.”
