ALPHA DOG TRAINING: Long Drop Step-away (Stay) With Distractions Because we can! Click on the HD icon for better quality video. Feel free to share this video, or any other pictures or videos on our timeline. This video was taken a couple of years ago. We were going to put it on our website, but just haven’t got around to it yet. It is quite long (we filmed the entire 45 minutes) so I sped up most sequences and left a couple at normal speed. The 20 dogs in the Drop Step-away hold their ground for 45 minutes. They shuffle a little bit as they get comfortable, but they stay put. As usual, there was no rehearsal and some of these distractions were completely new to the dogs. Some of the dogs were a little unsure when it the louder motorised distractions were presented, and you will see the GSP at the right trying to sniff nearly every dog as they are recalled through the group, but they don’t break position. The big brown Labradoodle at the front is very wary of the remote-control car zipping around because it accidentally crashed into him at one stage, but he listens to his owner and doesn’t move. The black Cocker Spaniel shuffles out of the way of a child heading straight for her on a scooter, but maintains her Drop position. Leadership and trust are essential elements of all owner and dog relationships, but many owners lose control of their dogs when they become distracted or when they over-react in certain situations. The Canine Leadership System teaches owners how to train their dogs to listen and to follow their lead, when required, particularly when control is needed the most. The 11 other dogs used for distraction are also highly trained and it was great to see them all holding a Sit Step-away whilst their owners called them, one-by-one, through the dogs Dropped on the ground. And by the way, some of the dogs in this video began their training journey with serious behavioural problems, ranging from general lack of confidence, dog aggression, over-excitability and anxiety issues. We hope you enjoy the video and perhaps even feel moved to share it. Dog training is great fun and we hope the videos on our Facebook page inspire others to get involved. ABOUT ALPHAS METHODS: The Alpha Canine Group has developed reward-based methods that include a contrasting correction process that clearly teaches the dogs the difference between acceptable and unacceptable obedience responses, and acceptable and unacceptable behaviours - all under realistic levels of distraction. This is achieved by focusing on the positive aspect of the correction process where Good Boy/Girl becomes the most powerful reinforcer in the communication with our dogs. With the Alpha developed principle of Canine Cognitive Tonal Conditioning (CCTC), praise is taken well beyond its traditional use in the learning process applied by food reward methods. All aspects of Alphas training methods are fully explained and demonstrated in our free first session and tour held twice weekly at Alpha Dog Training.
