APolice corporal, Efom Andei has been arrested and detained by the police for allegedly shooting and killing a driver along 1-3-5 Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chris Anyanwu, while briefing journalists on the incident, said the corporal who was on stop and search duty, while pursuing a suspected felon, misused his firearm and killed the driver. He said the policeman had been arrested and is in custody for further investigation, saying he would be charged to court for murder. According to him, at about 2:15 hours of 23/01/2014 one CPL Elom, Ohaukwu axis of the Abakaliki-Enugu Highway with other colleagues when they received information that an armed robbery gang was heading towards their end in a purportedly stolen Dyna vehicle without registration number. A few minutes after the information, the said vehicle came racing towards their stop-and-search point. It was flagged down but the driver refused to stop and meandered through the temporary barrier put in place, thereby evading arrest. A good Samaritan later offered assistance to the policemen and pursued the fleeing suspects at a point near a junction popularly known as 1-3-5, the fleeing driver diverted to an adjoining road. On sighting the policemen the driver took to his heels. In a bid to get him arrested, the corporal used his firearm and bullet hit the driver. He was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki for treatment but unfortunately he passed on, the PPRO stated. Anyanwu, however, said that the commissioner of police and the entire management team of the state command commiserated with the family, relatives and friends of the deceased with firm assurance that the circumstance leading to the unfortunate incident would be thoroughly investigated and justice will take its full course.
