AURORA ORCHESTRA Friday 14th November at 7.30pm Aurora Orchestra continues its residency at The Apex with a collaborative performance featuring Manu Delago, known worldwide for his work with Icelandic superstar Björk. A percussionist and composer, Delago has pioneered the mesmerising sound of the hang – an instrument that looks like an upturned wok but makes the most beautiful sound. You don’t just need to take our word for it; you can see a video of Manu Delago playing the hang. If your idea of perfection in a chamber orchestra concert is centred around Mozart and Haydn then this concert may not be for you. However, if you have a sense of adventure, an appreciation of wonderful musicians and a streak of fun coursing through your veins then come and give this a go – you won’t be disappointed! Together, the orchestra and Manu Delago take a surreal journey through the rooms of a house, starting in the kitchen with a jazz ballet for spoons, dishcloths, sieves and saucepans by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů and ending up in the bathroom with Manu Delago’s brilliantly rhythmic music for two acoustic toothbrushes. The programme also features radiantly beautiful chamber music from Thomas Adès, Toru Takemitsu, and Felix Mendelssohn (his Octet) as well as a fast-paced new work for strings and electronics by Manu Delago, this concert takes listeners from the sublime to the ridiculous (and back again!). The evening will start with students from County Upper School performing alongside members of the orchestra in a work they have written that is inspired by the theme and repertoire from the rest of the programme.
