Accidental reason for doing what you do: After a frustrating session with one of my singing classes today in which I had the students monologue song lyrics, one guy brings in this song and does it with no sense of respect for the work. I proceed to curse out the class (not my finest, but all too often, moment as an educator) especially because the lyrics include I want to be surrounded by art...They riot in the streets because there is not enough money to share. I ask if they do not see that this is exactly what is going on in the world which then leads into a conversation about the Grand Jury rulings and accompanying protests. Apparently this is the first opportunity these high school students have gotten a chance to discuss Ferguson and Staten Island at school. I am grateful for being able to accommodate an important conversation for these inquisitive persons to discuss these events as well as the need for artistic/ creative minded persons to occupy intellectual space. youtu.be/Qf_ZgPmT2WI
