After watching 12 Years as a Slave my mind is burning with thoughts of the past and the plight of being Black in America. My heart breaks when I think of how as a slave, one could get beaten or even killed just for being able to read and write and now ,even with knowledge at our fingertips, many Black people of my generation still wont pick up a book. We are so disconnected from ourselves, who we are, and where we come from! My heart aches when I think of how we as Black people have to teach our children things that no parent should ever have to. I dont have a son but I cant help but wonder, as a Black woman, how do we teach our black sons that because of the color of their skin they will most often be a target for racism, hatred and bigotry? How do you look into the eyes of an innocent child and explain to him that because he is a black male someone without even knowing him may view his presence as a threat and be afraid of him? How do we explain to our precious little boys that for no other reason than the fact they are black males some people will automatically characterize them as bums, hoodlums, and thugs? How does a person go about teaching their son that because he is a black male no matter how educated he may be he will still be targeted by police as a potential criminal simply by walking the street alone at night? How do we explain to our black sons that wearing a hoodie in a predominantly white neighbor just might end his life? My heart is so heavy right now
