Akunyi, 59 died in an Indian hospital on 7 June, this year after a battle with cancer. She was a university teacher, worked with the Petroleum Trust Fund and was appointed head of NAFDAC where she pioneered the restoration of sanity to Nigerian’s drug and consumable sector. She was subsequently appointed Minister of Information by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, a position she held until she resigned to go into active politics. She was a delegate to the just-concluded National Conference. Speaking at the wake-keep, the husband of the deceased, Dr Chike Akunyili, commended President Goodluck Jonathan and other Nigerians for their solidarity throughout the demise of the former Information Minister. He described his late wife as a courageous, worthy and kind-hearted woman who fought for the interest of the country. He said, “If every Nigerian can possess Dora’s character in every of their endeavour, this country will be good. She touched many lives in this country and beyond. We lived together for 36 years and I enjoyed every bit of it because she was straightforward and humble.” “I can tell you that the death of Dora is marked by the community and Nigeria in general. She wrote her name in gold. And so, in death, she brought Nigerians together in grief,” the clergyman said. Dignitaries at the burial included – Chief Willie Obiano (Executive Governor of Anambra State, the former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), his wife Victoria, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and wife Beatrice and the wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Bola. Others were – Governors Rochas Okorocha (Imo) and Isah Yuguda (Bauchi), wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Josephine Elechi, her Abia counterpart, Odochi Orji and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha. Also in attendance were former Governors Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Peter Obi, Hon. Ernest Okafor, Senator Chris Ngige, Virgy Etiaba, Minister of Information and Communications Labaran Maku, and Sen. Joy Emodi., Senators, Ministers and a long list of personalities from all walks of life. We wish the family/friends of the be rived the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Also stressing the need for our dear nation to acknowledge and support ideologies & lives of patriotic citizens who have devoted their life to offer selfless services to motherland!
