Alaskans: It is important to act now! Let your voice be heard if you are concerned about the state of public education, and the funding crisis facing ASD and districts across the state. Here is a list of legislators to write. The biggest request is to raise the BSA (base student allocation.) There are also bills out right now that are proposed which would change the AK constitution to allow school choice. This would allow public funds to go to private schools. (Ive taught at two private schools, and attended two private colleges, so I am not against them! They certainly have their place!) I just worry about the divide growing larger between the haves and have nots. And I also worry about the undermining of public education when funds are funneled elsewhere. There are lots of examples from other states that show the detriments of school choice. Private and home schooling families are already eligible for grant money to use for music, art, science, etc. So, the argument that they are tax payers not using a public service falls apart for me.
