Although there are strong arguments in favor of fracking, and although some environmentalist groups seem more interested in destroying America’s industrial independence than in protecting the environment, we feel it is unwise to approve fracking until the identity of the chemicals is disclosed. Claiming that they are proprietary is no excuse to keep them secret when public safety is at stake. Only a few large companies are in this business, and it is certain that they all know the identities of the chemicals, so preventing the public from knowing does not give any of them a competitive advantage over the others.
