Although you wouldnt necessarily know it from all the ads for movies with digital animals, super heroes (animated and otherwise), and alleged human beings outrunning fireballs, this is a golden age of American movies comparable to the 60s and 70s (and a golden age of television, for that matter: Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Good Wife, etc). The brilliant actors are so numerous its hard to single a few out. The same could almost be said for directors, but heres a sampling: the Coen brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Serious Man, No Country for Old Men, Fargo.), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, The Royal Tenenbaums), Alexander Payne (Nebraska, Sideways, About Schmidt, Election), Paul Greengrass (at last putting his immense skills for visceral action to great use in Captain Phillips), Paul Thomas Anderson (who got it all together for There Will Be Blood, even if he lost it in The Master), Spike Jonze (Her, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) and J.C. Chandor (All is Lost). Its nice, once again, to be looking forward to the next movies of certain actors and directors.
