Amy Akers, Phd A research team from the University of Torino identified an important role for the CCM1 protein to maintain normal levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) molecules. Further investigation into this molecular pathway suggests that the CCM1 protein provides protective benefits by shielding the blood vessels from ROS-induced cellular damage. This work leads to the hypothesis that, mutation of the CCM1 gene would lead to loss of this protective effect and could contribute to CCM lesion development.
