An animal control officer with the Parker County Sheriffs Office - TopicsExpress

An animal control officer with the Parker County Sheriffs Office responded to a caller reporting a little black and white mixed breed dog that was chained to a poll without water or adequate shade last Tuesday afternoon. According to the probable cause affidavit this is what happened: When the officer arrived she pounded on the door of the home but no one answered. The little dog, on a chain came out of his Dogloo. When he reached the end of his chain he collapsed. Later she would learn that the dogs name was Gator. There was a mop bucket near the dog, sort of. When the officer pulled the chain its entire length, it still came almost 3 feet short of the bucket, not that it would have made any difference, really since the bucket was empty. A bowl that sat near the bucket was also empty. She felt the ground around the bucket and the bowl. She said it was completely dry. The officer took the dog, put him in her air-conditioned truck and headed toward the Millsap Vet Clinic. On the way to the vet clinic, the little dog died. When the vet examined the little dog and took his temperature it registered 110 degrees. He concluded the cause of the Gators death was heat exhaustion. The investigator in the case talked with Gators two owners - Attavia Dean Cross, 53, of the Springtown area and her daughter Kearsten Ann Henager, 22, also of the Springtown area of Parker County. Both women talked with the investigator and told him they had left their home at about 8 a.m. to take Henagers child to a doctors appointment. Cross said that she had left water in the mop bucket within Gators reach and that they should have probably given him a bigger container of water, because he had a tendency to knock his water bucket over. Both women said that after the doctors appointment they ran errands and paid bills, then picked up their spouses. The family then went home at about 4 p.m. According to the affidavit, both women admitted that they should have given Gator a bigger bucket and checked on him at some point during the day. According to the document, Cross told the investigator in the case, I didnt think. That was an understatement. Both women were arrested on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 5, 2014. Both face charges of Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals - Torture, a state jail felony.
