An excerpt from The Prince of Omerá: “Come back in, Johnny,” Marcese shouted. “Benito never learn, Johnny. Always need money,” said Marcese. “He asks me for a couple thousand I said no. Why? “If I give it to him and he no pay it back, I lose the money and a cousin. If I say no, I still lose a cousin but have the money.” Marcese laughed uproariously. “Your new boss pretty smart, huh Johnny?” Marcese told Valenti that his cousin and others would come to see him only when they were in trouble. In good times, they were nowhere to be found. “I never see them except when they need help, Johnny. So I tell them, ‘wherever you spent your summers, you spend your winters.’ Benito says he’ll remember me in his heart. I say, ‘I wanna you remember me in your wallet.’” Again, he laughed so hard that his whole body shook, and he had to catch his breath. “You remember that, Johnny. Also remember, if you want to keep your friends, never ask them for money. Hang out with people better than you and spend money on them. See, Johnny, that’s why I am called ‘The Brains.’”
