Another strange idea. I want to create a facebook event for the simple act of listening. That is, a group of friends would sit in my living room. (1) I play an album. We listen from start to finish, no pause, minimal discussion. (2) Then, as a group, we take a walk, find a space outdoors, and each person has 5 minutes to encapsulate the experience of the album, in whatever language and terms he or she deems appropriate. One rule: he or she cannot make reference to another person in the group. (3) Once each person has spoken, each person is then given a time to speak, referring exclusively to the reactions of others—either at the time of the listening or from personal explanations. This time would give everyone the chance to experience an album (1) ritualistically; (2) personally; and (3) contextually, socially, vicariously.
