Anyone old enough to remember the 1968 - 1971 sitcom, Julia which featured Diahann Carroll? It was basically a Black exploitation situation that took White Americas mind off the real Black experience and probably lulled many apolitical Black Americans into a false sense of progress. This new show appears to me to be an update of the same kind of exploitation. While I am gratified that it does not appear to be a revamp of Amos and Andy, when it comes to seeing the Black experience in America in a way that would shine the light on what more can be done to level the playing field, we tend to see precious little. Making silly jokes about whether to call the kid Andre or Andy is not going to help combat the right wing racist-fascist revival that this country is presently going through!
