April is Poetry Month, and I will be sharing some of my favorite poems. This is from my late cousin John. We sure do miss him. I have waited in the blue-gray tail of the night With my fathers rifle cross my knees For the first small thread of light To touch the top of the highest trees. I have watched the mist rise in the hollow Like the breath of ghosts lying in the chambered earth And seen dark eyes in the leaves as they follow The rift in the eastern sky, the morning birth. The dogs know, answering yard to yard That some spirit runs the horizon track When the sun is an amber shard A sign of gold in mourning black. The phantom races and taunts the dawn The Indian forgotten, the promise unknown Before the emptiness of pale sky is drawn Look for your soul beneath a Missouri stone. John G. Newberry
