Arizona Closes 6,600 Ignored Child-Abuse Cases By Candice Naranjo Thu Sep 25th, 2014 2:56pm America/Los_Angeles PHOENIX (AP) – A team created by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer after the discovery that nearly 6,600 child abuse and neglect reports weren’t investigated says it’s closed all the cases and removed nearly 600 children from their caregivers. Thursday’s announcement came from the team charged with reviewing cases that had been improperly marked as not worthy of being investigated in recent years. Child welfare investigators personally saw more than 13,000 children to ensure they were safe. The scandal at the state’s Child Protective Services department came to light last November and led to the agency’s elimination and the creation of a new Department of Child Safety focused solely on that mission. Brewer called the Legislature into special session in May to create the agency and add about $200 million in new funding. (Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
