Around 2002, I was invited by Star Cruises PLC to form and lead a Malaysian Consortium to refurbish their Cruise Liners. The original members were the project managers for KLCC and a public listed construction company. The idea was to form an A team of the best of the best that Malaysia had to undertake that work. At that time Star Cruises had 11 ships which required refurbishment every one and a half years. The problem they faced was that the Malaysian contractors hitherto could not take the mental stress of shipbuilding which required work 24/7 with project timeline checks of approx 1/2 hour. My work allowed me to meet the top construction companies in Malaysia. I then decided to enlarge the team constituents by allowing Singapore companies to participate as well. To that end I met up with the full board of Keppel and the GM of Sembawang and others. However after 2 and a half years I reported back to Star Cruises that it was not possible for us to undertake work at that level. I then left the Malaysian corporate arena to focus on my own business and my son. And then I discovered chess via him. And I still ruminate on the possibilities of that game to train our players/people on correct thinking and thinking under stress till today.
