As a teacher at Poolburn School in the 80s I used to use my paintings for storytelling & then later for kids to explore the story behind the painting. My Andrew Wyeth paintings always evoked rich responses from my pupils. For the first few lessons I left it as just oral storytelling - then when the pupils got more responsive (not just literal descriptions) the paintings were 5 minute lesson starters. As the kids came up with ideas I wrote story-maps on the blackboard so that spelling wasnt an obstacle to fluent writing.
