“As the legal equivalent of health insurance, group and prepaid legal service plans foster preventive law by making legal services affordable to more people.” ~Dianne Molvig, Group & Prepaid Legal Service Plans, Wisconsin Lawyer, Vol. 72, No. 6, June 1999 You Are My Attorney Story I would like for you to pretend for a moment that you own one of the largest law firms in this area and I came into your office today with this story: Last night my wife and I were talking and we decided that we need our own law firm and I want you to be that law firm. Now I don’t want to pay your standard hourly rate. What I’d like to do is work out a flat fee arrangement where every month you send me a bill and I’ll send you a check. Since you charge $150.00+ an hour for your services I want you to tell me how much you would charge me monthly for the following services: I want unlimited access to you. I want to be able to call you during the course of a normal workday, and receive a consultation on any subject or number of subjects I want to talk about be it a personal or business matter. From that call we want you to give me advice, write a letter for me or make a phone call on my behalf. I want you to review all contracts before I sign them to make sure my legal rights are protected. Since I don’t have a will I want you to write a comprehensive will for me right away. Now, I drive like a teenager and I have teenagers at home that drive like I do. So if we ever receive a moving traffic violation I want you to represent us anywhere in the United States that we receive that traffic ticket. I realize that you don’t practice law in every state. So if we get a traffic ticket in a state that you are not licensed to practice law in I want you to hire an attorney in that state to represent us and you pay that attorney out of whatever we agree upon in our monthly rate. Since I could be sued I want you to represent me if I am ever sued in a civil suit or criminal suit job related. If the IRS ever knocks on my door and wants to audit or take me to court I want you there to defend me. I know you go home every night at five o’clock so when you lock up and go home for the night I want you to carry a cell phone with you so if I am ever detained or questioned by security or law enforcement personnel after hours I can call you for legal advice or help. Based on that, what monthly flat rate would you charge me for all this legal protection, for me and my family? Would you do these services for me if I bought you a cup of coffee a day? Believe it or not, that’s what Pre-Paid Legal Services provides for $26mo. ID Theft protection is available for $9.95mo w/ the plan or $12.95mo w/o the plan. Is peace of mind for you and your family worth a cup of coffee a day? Bill Milner, Independent Associate, Legal Shield, Inc. legalshield/hub/bmilner §
