Aside from the looting, the vandalism and the violence., things - TopicsExpress

Aside from the looting, the vandalism and the violence., things are messed up these days. And like always, I have an opinion. But this isnt one of my run-of-the-mill rants. The events that has occurred in Ferguson, MO is not unique. It happens time and time again. It happens to whites, blacks, Hispanics, etc... The sad reality is that while its being painted as a race issue, race is only one component to the issue. Its a poverty issue. Its a police issue. Its a societal issue above all else. While being a police officer is a noble profession, its a profession that should show restraint as well as honor. And too often, officers go too far. And once is too often. Its a poverty issue because crime occurs in impoverished neighborhoods more often. Poverty can be directly linked to crime, and yet we as a people cant seem to shake the chains of poverty off as a whole. Its not just the responsibility of the individual, but as well as a society. And its societal because we are all to blame. The complacency of the populous to events happening across the country has shown us that most of us dont want to be involved. We think its horrible on what ever might be happening, yet we dont get involved and do something about it. Well, to those people I just want to say one thing. Youre wrong. The rioters and police arent the issue, its you. The quiet, the apathetic, the cynical and the fearful. Weve let this happen for too long. You dont know what to do? Heres a few things. Quit being paranoid. The vast majority of people are good hearted individuals. They dont want to rob you, rape you, take advantage of you nor harm you in any way shape or form. Dont judge people on how they look. Actually get to know people. The only way to combat racism, bigotry, tension between different cultures is through familiarity. Too often we make quick judgements without actually knowing who and how people are. And finally, show respect for your fellow human beings. Thats easy enough, right? Finally I want to say while there are rioting and looting, dont judge this moment by that but for the majority of those who are trying to be peaceful. They are deeply upset about the state of affairs in this country. And so should you and I. So I will leave by saying that I will stand with those who feel disenfranchised, with those who fight for their right to be a human with dignity; black and white, gay and straight, religious and nonreligious, those who are economically disadvantaged, and of those who carry a good heart within them. And to the police of good conscience, stand up and be an example. You have more responsibility now to make the world a better place than ever before. Share this, spread it, and remember that you have more power and responsibilities than you think.
