Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. - Matt 7:7 (NKJV) Questions - Pt 1 When I was in Year 10 (Tenth Grade), I had a maths teacher who got quite irate if he ever had to repeat himself. If someone asked a question about solving a problem of which he had already covered, he would explode in a furore. Consequently, pretty much all of the class never asked questions if they were unsure of anything. The way we learned was by lots of hush-toned interactions with each other, struggling to figure out the complex equations. It meant that our knowledge stayed limited to what we, as students knew. And whilst there was a bevy of answers standing before us, it was inaccessible and in turn, useless. Questions are like a gold diggers pick or a high-pressure hose at a car wash. They uncover what’s lying beneath the surface or hidden just out of reach in the dark corners of our understanding. Jesus asked LOTS of questions. In fact, His teaching style was to ask them frequently. Come to think of it, a lot of the answers He gave were actually, you guessed it, questions! Our kids ask us questions all the time. Almost to the point of frustration on some occasions. It’s said that kids tend to be sponges, soaking up information and forming their world-view, up to the age of 7. About the time, we stop asking lots of questions is around the time the development of our meta-narrative comes to a halt… or at least slows down dramatically. Asking questions is imperative to our development both individually and from the community level. God is the Alpha and the Omega and so our understanding of Him, especially the vastness of who He is, needs to be dug up with the shovel of inquisitive question-asking! Of course, James 4:8 says “draw near to God and He will draw near to you” Don’t stop asking questions. It’s not disrespectful or faithless to do so. It’s how we paddle our little boats across the vast ocean of information known as human life. Its how God encourages us to discover Him… in everything!
