At 0215 today, Engine 176 from Station 1 was dispatched to Wannamassas in Ocean Township on a RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) call with RIT team members from Wayside Fire who responded on Ladder 290. Initial reports came in as a working dryer fire, flames and smoke showing, and all residents evacuated. The fire was quickly contained and all members of District 36 were returned to quarters and back in service at 0245. Each year, dryer fires kill an average of 5 people, injure 100, and cause $35 million in property loss. "Failure to clean" dryer filters and vents is the leading cause. It takes less time for you to clean your filter and vent hose than it takes most fire companies to put out your fire.
