Attention Citizen Scientists in the greater Bangor area...or anyone who wants to get muddy and have fun! The coffer dam at the Veazie Dam was breached today (on purpose) and We (Penobscot River Restoration Trust) are looking for at least a dozen volunteers to join us along the shoreline in the coming days and weeks. If you are interested and available, please review the below information and let us know when you would like to take part in the effort. FMI Contact: Cheryl Daigle Community Liaison /Outreach Coordinator Penobscot River Restoration Trust Office phone: 207-817-7362 Cell phone: 207-232-9969 E-mail: [email protected] Twitter: twitter/PenobscotTrust Website: penobscotriver.org DETAILS! Initial Drawdown: We are looking for a team of volunteers to begin at the site tomorrow (Wednesday 8/21) afternoon, and then full days beginning on Thursday (8/22) and the days immediately following. With the exception of Wednesday, it will be a full day on the river (plan on 8AM – 4PM). If you can only work a half day, we can accommodate that as well. Mussel Movers (MMs) should consider the following: * Wear sturdy closed toed water shoes, old sneakers, or boots – this is a must! (we could encounter glass, metal, construction debris, etc.). * The work will be physically rigorous with some slippery areas and/or boulders to navigate * Sun screen, bug spray, sun hats, sunglasses (polarized probably helpful) and personal water. * You will get wet and muddy – a change of clothes, towels etc. are recommended. There are two meeting points - please indicate if you have a preference for a particular side of the river: * Eddington boat launch off Rte 178 * Access point on Penobscot Trust property on Veazie St., Veazie The Penobscot Trust will provide pizza or sandwiches, snacks, and drinks for lunch and will have extra sunscreen, bug spray, and a first-aid kit on hand. Please let us know if you have any serious medical conditions or food allergies. Ethan Nadeau (the Penobscot’s Trust’s Mussel expert from Biodrawversity) and his team will start the day with a “training”. We will work as teams with someone from his crew as the leader for each team. MMs don’t need to be biologists, just enthusiasts.
