Scott Fitzgeralds classic novel, and in Simon Levys adaptation, approved by the Fitzgerald Estate. This production is open to actors age 16 and older only. Character Breakdown: Jay Gatsby - The script notes describe Gatsby as “a romantic idealist, with a disarming smile.” This character needs to convey a little mystery; we have to wonder whether he’s for real or not. He has to seem fraudulent enough for the audience to be suspicious, but genuine enough to be credible. Daisy Buchanan - A transplanted southerner possessed of an artificial credulity about the world, especially when it comes to her marriage. She fails to see the truth about her violent, womanizing husband, and we are left to wonder whether she genuinely lacks the appropriate insight to see him for what he is, or if she’s pretending in order to keep up appearances. Nick Carraway - Narrates the play, in effect, which is largely staged from his perspective. A transplanted Midwesterner, poor by New York standards, he lacks the pretense necessary to fit in among the social elite. Very forthcoming about his background and his lack of means, he is part participant, part observer. Tom Buchanan - Massive. Athletic. Violent. Bigoted. Womanizer. Nothing redemptive or moral about this character. Jordan Baker - Daisy’s friend, a professional golfer. Her character is exceedingly athletic, a little masculine even. She makes an artificial romantic foil for Nick, as well as a more abrupt and forthright observer of Daisy’s marital predicament. Myrtle Wilson - Tom’s girlfriend. Motivated entirely by physical lust for Tom and by material wants which she believes he can fulfill. Shallow. George Wilson - Myrtle’s cuckold husband; ordinary and clueless about his wife’s affair. Meyer Wolfsheim - Slightly mysterious long-time acquaintance of Gatsby; sheds dubious light on Gatsby’s past. Mr. McKee/Mrs. McKee: Neighbors in the apartment building Tom has purchased for Myrtle. Mrs. Michaelis: Witness to car accident. Policeman, Dancers
