Australia Day- What a mixed bag of emotions this day evokes? - TopicsExpress

Australia Day- What a mixed bag of emotions this day evokes? Righfully so. Ive heard alot of people dismiss the treatment of the Indiginous Population as something that occured in the distant past. Complaints of welfare, scholarships, hand-outs that some interpret as being excessive and unecessary. The fact is that prior to 1967 (not even one life-time ago) Aborigines were not considered to be human beings according to the Australian Constitution. Another fact is that in 1967, 10% of the White Australian population were opposed to Aborgines being considered as human beings. That is over 500,000 people that viewed them as being sub-human. So long ago.. I dont think so. So Australia Day should be a time to celebrate the great country that so many people have flocked here to call home, including myself. It is one of the greatest countries in the world, with the best standard of living. BUT NEVER FORGET THAT IT CAME AT SUCH A HIGH PRICE THAT WAS PAID BY MANY WHO DONT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITTY TO ENJOY IT. If we forget or disrespect this fact- then it makes us not human. So acknowledgement, respect and accountability of those sacrafices not made by us is what Australia Day should be about. Not boats landing and placing a materistic flag in the sand. Never forget!!!
