*BLACK HISTORY FACT* The case of Roberts v. The City of Boston - TopicsExpress

*BLACK HISTORY FACT* The case of Roberts v. The City of Boston began on this date in 1849. In 1848, five year old Sarah Roberts was barred from the local primary school because she was black; and as a result her father Benjamin Roberts sued the city. The lawsuit was part of an organized effort by the African American community to end racially segregated schools. A city ordinance passed in 1845 said any child unlawfully excluded from the public schools could sue the city. School authorities argued that special provisions had been made for colored students. In April 1850, the Supreme Judicial Court issued its ruling in Roberts v. The City of Boston. Chief Justice Shaw ruled in favor of the right of the school committee to set its own education policy. #JoeMadison #BlackEagle #RobertvTheCityofBoston #UrbanView #SiriusXM SiriusXM Radio
