BNBF Northern Qualifier 2013 Sponsored by CNP Drug testing sponsored by Vyomax Nutrition Report by Dawn Roberts Judges : Head Judge: Vicky McCann. Andrew Chappell, John Clarke, Mark Claxton, Daz Cooper, Eric Dowey, David Hannah, Rachel Hayes. Evening MC : David O’Byrne The Northern qualifier changed venue to the Charter Theatre, Guild Hall, Preston for this year due to the usual place (RNCM) being refurbished. The venue did not disappoint in terms of spectators seating, stage size, back stage facilities and lighting once the team worked their usual magic. Great location in the centre of the city of Preston with a Nandos being very conveniently located right opposite and a McD a little further down the road for those wishing to be more calorific in their post show eating. The show was a little down in numbers compared to previous years possibly due to it being the penultimate qualifier rather than the final one but the quality of competitors did not disappoint. I get the impression that some competitors have never watched a BNBF show before entering themselves. Just because you’re the most muscular or the biggest person in your gym does not mean you would automatically look good against the amazing standard of some of the other competitors. Two competitors did not turn up for the evening show having spent the prejudging looking rather uncomfortable on stage. Do your homework guys before entering. Thank you to the spectators for making lots of noise. Good support really adds to the atmosphere. You didn’t let us down. General feedback observations of the day: Don’t walk on stage with your head down looking like you don’t want to be on stage! Watch the DVD of the master’s figure to see how this should be done! Keep your head up, look to the audience and give a little smile and walk with confidence but not cocky! Some competitors need to work on their poses. Poor posing can reduce your physique. The BNBF run free workshops throughout the country (Perth, Sheffield, Manchester and London). Get along and learn how it’s done. Learn to hold the poses for a few minutes, not only is it a good CV workout but it will stop you shaking so much on stage. When posing in the call outs, try to avoid swinging/turning side to side. It’s the judges who need to see you not the far side of the audience. It’s also apparent that some competitors practice in a mirror and neglect their rear poses. Don’t overstay your welcome on stage once your music has finished, if everyone had a further 15 seconds the show would be much longer! Pay attention to your trunks/bikinis. A poor fitting costume can distract from your physique. Off the peg outfits may be the quickest to purchase but they have not been custom made to fit you. Plan ahead and order some in plenty time. TEENS (top 3 invited to finals) 5 in this class and good standard for the youngest competitors of the day. 1st Dale Rennison. Dale immediately appeared to be the winner when he walked on stage. He needs to work on holding the poses for longer in both prejudging and during your free posing round and to open up his back on rear double biceps rather than crunching the scapula in. Good lat spread but could look even more impressive if you held hands were higher (on waist) rather than on the hips. Excellent quad sweep. Worthy winner. 2nd Alex Riordan Alex has a tall frame to fill but presented his physique very well with my favourite smile of the day. Hamstrings and calves need a little work and open up on rear double biceps to show back width. Confident routine which was my favourite in this class. Condition was good but a little tighter might benefit for the finals. Well done Alex. 3rd Jake Sharp Jake was out muscled by the top 2 but his condition was good enough to bring some definition through making him a worthy 3rd place. Good definition in quads but needs more mass in legs particularly from the rear. Keep building on your frame Jake, you have good potential. Good evening routine too. 4th Jake Porter. Jake has a tall frame to fill. He presented his physique very well with good posing and had decent condition. Hamstring poses were particularly weak but his legs did tighten up for the evening. Top prize for the best support team! Keep working on filling out that frame. 5th Jordan Dean. Jordan looked delighted to be on stage especially in the evening round. Unfortunately he was out massed in this class. Keep working hard in the gym Jordan and keep practicing those poses. Huge well done to you. JUNIORS (Top 2 invited to finals) 1st James Doyle. James was clearly one of the favourites as he stepped on the stage. Excellent symmetry and good mass with a good level of condition. Tighten up the hamstring poses for the finals and maybe work on some of the poses in the free routine to show physique off to its best potential. 2nd Matt Hupalo. Top prize for the cheesiest cheeky grin! Clearly happy to be on stage especially in the evening routine. Matt possibly had the best condition in the class for the prejudging but had smoothed out a little in the evening. Try not to stoop so much doing rear lat spread and perhaps look at better fitting trunks. Tan was much improved for the evening show. 3rd Kyle Dalton. Although Kyle had a decent condition, had he been a little tighter he may have placed higher. Good symmetry but legs were too soft. Work on holding the poses better during the evening round. 4th Peter Varga. Possibly the biggest competitor in the line up but condition was not tight enough to award him a placing. A little more width to back needed to balance out such a tall frame and work on rear poses. 5th Conor Donoghue Needs to work on major muscle groups to bring out the symmetry and general muscle mass (wider lats and shoulders with improved quad sweep). His condition improved at night and rear leg poses also need some work. 6th Fadi Beshai Fadi had a presentation that was pleasing to watch. His evening routine was very smooth with nice poses to show off his physique. Fadi clearly has some decent muscle and a nice symmetry but his condition let him down on the day. Come back tighter Fadi and I’m sure you’ll score much better. MASTERS (Top 2 to finals) 1st Steve Howarth. Easily the biggest guy on the day! Great level of mass and good symmetry. Condition was good but Steve knows he will need to be tighter for finals. Had he been a little tighter he may have got the overall but he’s no doubt more focused for that position in a few weeks time. His entertaining evening routine and good execution of poses showing the best of his physique throughout the day awarded him the best presentation and he executed some wonderful figure poses to show his delight! The only negative comment is to quicken up getting into some of the compulsory poses at the prejudging. 2nd Andrew Burrill. Andrew had good condition and a pleasing symmetry but was out massed by Steve. Tighten up the poses from the rear for the finals and please don’t look so serious, a little smile can help! 3rd Daz Thomas Prideaux . If ever anyone looked delighted to get a trophy, this is the man!! He literally jumped for joy when his name was called out in first place. His wife ran up for a sneaky kiss of congratulations. A pleasure to see. Daz has a good rear double bicep pose but failed to tense his hamstrings. Similarly on the side poses, more shape needs to be brought in to the hamstrings. An improved shoulder cap will also help improve symmetry. 4th Darren Bird. Darren has attended some of the BNBF posing workshops but needs to practice more as he appeared a little rigid on the day, maybe this was due to nerves rather than resorting back to old habits. Compulsory poses need to be reached sooner in the prejudging as he was failing to set before the next pose was being called out. Keep working on general mass. 5th Peter Gawtry. Peter is another competitor who could present his physique much better. He needs to stop twisting side to side so much when posing, the judges who matter are sat right in front. He also leans back too much in his poses, the judges are sat lower than the stage. 6th Chris Flanagan. Chris was returning to stage after a couple of years out of the scene. Chris has good chest development that dominates the rest of his balance. Keep working on lat width and leg mass Chris. MASTERS OVER 50s (top 2 to finals) 1st Geoff Baron. Possibly the lightest tan of the day though clearly did not affect his placing though may have improved his presentation for photos etc. Geoff had great condition but appeared to lack in confidence in his posing and did not show his physique off to its fullest. An improved lat spread will bring his symmetry out more and not leaning back so much in some of the poses will display his physique better to the judges. His hamstrings were clearly there but not always displayed in the rear poses. One to watch in the finals. 2nd Lloyd Stewart. Fabulous to see this man on the BNBF stage having been a serious and successful natural competitor for many years. At the young age of 63, Lloyd has a great level of mass, good quads and a wonderful evening presentation with a cool strut onto the stage. The audience clearly appreciated seeing such a fine physique. His condition was tighter for the evening show. 3rd David Blackburn. David has good symmetry. A tighter condition is required for a higher placing. His evening routine was very smooth and he appeared to be quietly confident in his presentation of it. 4th Kevin Howe. Kevin bounces too much in his posing which is distracting. Legs need more shape and condition to match his better developed upper body. He needs to open up the rear lat spread more to show back width off. MASTERS FIGURE (top 2 to finals) The 3 ladies in this class showed how to walk on stage in a professional and graceful manner. The stage presence of all 3 together was easily the best of the day. Well done. 1st Lynsey Wells. Lynsey brought a very tight package to the stage which could arguably have been too extreme for the figure class. She was the best conditioned female competitor of the day. A softer look for the finals may bring in a more full rounded figure and still not affect her placing. She has a wonderful poise and a pleasing T walk. Work on bringing out the abs better in the compulsory round and perhaps a little more mass to the glutes to complete the rear and side poses. 2nd Ildiko Iliffe. Ildiko was the best she has been to date. She presents herself well and has a lovely symmetry. Slightly longer strides in the T walk would come across as the confident woman she is and look at using arms in the “front facing pose of your choice” to add more shape to the structure. 3rd Deborah Holder. Deborah had a pleasing presentation and made a wonderful entrance onto the stage. She has a nice smile and walks very confidently. Keep working on your physique particularly the legs to score higher in the compulsory abs and thighs round. NOVICE (top 4 to the finals) The biggest line up of the day and of a standard suited to a finals so much so that the judges decided to take 4 through to the finals. 1st Christopher Poyner. One to watch for the future! This is Chris’s first appearance outside of the junior category. He has a good level of muscle with good symmetry and his condition was good enough to win him the Novice title but a little tighter condition for the finals would be recommended. Excellent poses but bring out lats a little more on rear double biceps. 2nd David Duffy. David has good mass but needs to be tighter to battle it out at the finals (he did look tighter in the evening show). His symmetry is helped with a tiny waist making his back looked even wider. His evening routine was very well executed to show his physique off. 3rd Tom Morgan. Tom had good condition. He had a more compact physique to the rest of the class but a tight and tidy package. His ab posing was one of his better poses. Work on quads for future shows but learn to bring the hamstrings out on the side poses to finish off your side presentation. Look at a darker tan for the finals. 4th Mark Rigby. Mark has good symmetry and a decent level of mass but was a little too soft in his condition for a higher place. His posing and presentation was very good using the poses to show off his physique well. His routine was good, very graceful and executed the right poses for his shape. Practice holding the poses for a little longer to stop shaking on stage. 5th Luke Hellowell. Luke needed more leg mass to be more competitive in this class. Straighten up on front relaxed poses. Learn to open up on rear poses. Good delt details on rear double biceps. 6th Philip Dean. Philip was the first competitor of the day to show hamstrings in his poses however, he needs to hold them in position throughout the whole length of the pose. He had good side poses but needs to fill out the pecs on front poses. 7th Andrew Rogers. Andrew needs to be tighter to show his muscular development better. He has good symmetry and a good level of muscle. He has big delts that dominated his rear poses. Also competing. Leon Sroka, a huge level of mass but needs to improve on condition. Tony Windle, work on general mass. Graham Wood, work on general mass. Christopher Wright, needs to be tighter. Work on upper body width. Pleasing symmetry side on. Good evening routine with good posing. Look at a darker tan next time. MISS PHYSIQUE Kelly Freeman was the only competitor in this category so automatically qualified for the finals although she is a worthy contender with a good level of muscle, improved symmetry from last year and a more confident appearance now she is an experienced successful competitor. Learn to hold the poses for longer to stop shaking and tighten up condition for the finals. Kelly was awarded best presentation for the female classes. MENS LIGHTWEIGHT (winner only to the final) 1st Chris Richards. Chris appeared to be very stiff in some poses and didn’t choose the best ones in his routine to show his physique off to its best potential. Bring out the lats in rear poses rather than scrunching the back in. He has excellent quads but will need to bring in a tighter package for the finals (and a darker tan). 2nd Richard Mapley. Richard did not look comfortable doing his evening routine. Be more confident with your posing without stooping (open up). A good level of conditioning but would benefit from extra mass on legs. MENS MIDDLEWEIGHT (top 2 to finals) 1st Matt Grimshaw. Matt has a tight tidy structure. He was possibly the tightest in the show from his rear poses with good detail in his hamstrings. His side tricep pose and abdominal pose were his strong points. He presented a good routine but needs to smile to polish it off. Perhaps a tighter condition for the finals to bring a little more details through in the quads. 2nd Stuart Pelling. Stuart had the largest physique in this class but his softer condition to his previous outings pushed him into second place on this occasion. His posing seemed a little awkward to his normal presentation but he did present some very good ones in his routine. Tighten up those rear poses and work on rear lat spread. 3rd James Carter. James needs to work more on his general mass, particularly upper width. He appeared to be in better condition in the evening. He failed to display his hamstrings in the afternoon but they came through better in the evening. 4th Scott Rhodes. Scott needs to be tighter particularly in the legs. Open up more on lat spreads and work on pec mass. A nice smooth routine in the evening round. HEAVYWEIGHTS (both invited to finals) The result in this class was neck and neck and an extra judge had to be called on to make the decision. Both competitors had different qualities but which one would win on the day? 1st Mark Ford. Mark had the better condition of the two. He needs to work on his upper body width to improve on symmetry and a little more general mass to fill out his tall frame. He posed his hamstrings well! 2nd Daniel Awolowa. Daniel was possibly the best he’s been to date but still needs to tighten up that condition. He had the larger mass of the two and a better symmetry but his lack of condition is perhaps what held him back in the final decision to be called upon. If Daniel can bring in the condition level of Mark he could reverse the placing. He needs to stop tilting back on his front lat spread. Work on calves! FIGURE (top 2 to finals) 1st Emma Grzona. Emma has pleasing side stances and presented herself very well in her mandatory poses. Her front poses could be improved by tightening up the quads and abs for the finals. An improved shoulder cap would help improve her width for symmetry. A confident display in the T walk. 2nd Stephanie Noble. Stephanie had the tightest condition in this class on her upper half but was a little soft in the legs. It’s possibly this imbalance of condition that pushed her down into second place today. If she can bring up the condition in her lower half to match her upper half then she could reverse the placing in the finals. Her strong pose was the rear double bicep showing a nice level of detail in her back. 3rd Nicky Rodgers. Nicky’s posing in the afternoon was a little stiff to the extent she did not look comfortable. An incident with her shoes backstage meant she had to perform the T walk in bare feet but this did not appear to affect her negatively. In fact her posing was much better in her bare feet that leads me to think perhaps she does not practice her compulsories sufficiently wearing her shoes. She looked pleasantly surprised to place 3rd. 4th Syreeta Linsley. Syreeta has good potential. Her stage presence was excellent. Her T walk was very good. Main points for the future are don’t look so worried (smile) and bring in a tighter package. One to watch for the future. 5th Yvette Geary. Yvette was new to the stage and never having watched a BNBF show looked a little baffled in some of her poses. Her tan was too light and her poses more akin to a bikini class rather than figure. If Yvette is to continue in figure she would need to work on more muscularity and presentation of her physique. 6th Yvonne Sheehy. Yvonne on this occasion was too soft. She lacked confidence in her T walk which also came across in the poses. Possibly first time nerves but plenty room for improvement. BATTLE FOR THE OVERALL An excellent winners line up. The winners of all the mens classes were lined up by the head judge ready for the battle. There were 4 possible main contenders in this, Masters winner Steve Howarth, Novice winner Chris Poyner, Heavyweight winner Mark Ford, and Lightweight winner Matt Grimshaw. Each brought something different to the line up. Steve had the mass, Chris had the symmetry, Mark had the condition and Matt, a balance of all 3 but in a more compact physique. After much juggling and a few compulsory rounds later the overall was awarded to the novice winner Chris Poyner. His pleasing symmetry and mass tipped the balance on this occasion. Overall Winner : Chris Poyner Best Presentation Female : Kelly Freeman Best Presentation Male : Steve Howarth On we go to Derby for the final qualifier. See you there.
