BROWN SNAKE #3 I have had a run of very large eastern brown snakes. For those who dont know Australian snakes, Eastern Browns are a highly strung, highly venomous snake - probably about the most dangerous I encounter. Callout was 11 minutes away and I rushed over. My lovely wife was with me!There was a crowd of people including a guy with a pitchfork! When you think about it a pitchfork would be an awful weapon to use against an agitated brown snake. Anyhow, I doubt that the person would have let the snake get within five meters of him. The snake had, of course, disappeared. There was a wooden pool fence and a small pile of timber and a pipe. The pitchfork guy thought the snake went into the pipe. I thought under the timber was more likely. I carefully approached the timber pile then saw the snake. Throught the gaps and on the other side of the pool fence. So a quick run around and into the pool area. I could see a heap of stuff where a snake would hide so I put myself between the stuff and where I thought the snake was. It worked, the snake saw me and immediately turned and bolted (I have the same effect on women!). It travelled along the fence until it reached a corner with a hole big enough for it to fit though. So it stuck its head through the hole. Guess where all the onlookers were! The snake just stopped and didnt have the courage to get closer to all those scary monsters. What I didnt know at the time is that all those scary monsters just upped and legged it when the head poked through. All I was aware of was that the bitey end was on the other side of the fence and the smelly end was within grabbing distance. So I grabbed it. Of course the snake wasnt going to make it too easy, she curled herself around the hole to prevent being pulled through. Not enough of her was on the other side of the fence for her to make more than a token effort. Surprisingly she didnt come though swinging and made no attempt to bite or threaten. Even so it was straight into the bag with her. At this point I heard someone ask if they could take a photo!
