BSNL to install more towers to fix call drop problems Even as the rain-triggered snags continue to hamper mobile services across Himachal, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has drawn a proposal to set up more base transmission stations (BTS). The last three months saw a constant rise in complaints of call drops and congestion in lines. Though the snags continue to hit services in most of the rural areas. SK Gupta, BSNL general manager of Himachal circle, said: “The BSNL has six secondary switches areas (SSA) in the Himachal circle comprised Shimla, Dharmshala, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur and Solan.” “At all SSAs, the BSNL have more than 15 lakh mobile consumers, 2.7 lakhs landline consumers and 50,000 broadband internet consumers,” said Gupta. Notwithstanding the statewide complaints of poor network, he said the problem was not in the entire state, but was area specific. “Network problem can be area specific, but we have not received much complaints from anywhere in the state,” added Gupta. In the wake of complaints related to poor network, the BSNL would install new BTS in different SSAs, he said. The SSA Dharmshala had demanded maximum 70 BTS, while Shimla 60, Hamirpur 60, Solan 40, Mandi 35 and Kullu 30, said BSNL deputy general manager Vijay Prakash. The work of installations of BTS was in progress, except in Shimla, said Prakash, where a long process had to be followed to get permissions for sites from the Shimla municipal corporation and other government departments. The Shimla SSA, which comprised Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahul and Spiti districts, there were maximum 4.25 lakh BSNL mobile consumers, he said. Near 200 BTS were functioning till date while in the Himachal circle the total installed BTS were near 1,250 in the SSA Shimla, said Gupta. The BSNL is offering various schemes for different sectors, but due to large number of consumers and fewer infrastructures, the snag-hit network has irked people of every corner of the state, said Nitesh Thakur, an university student. However, the BSNL complain section said there were few complaints of network problems in the Himachal circle. “The complaints registered were area specific and were triggered by bad weather, especially due to rain,” added Ved Prakash.
