Because pit bull attacks make great stories (and because most reporters are not dog auhhoities), virtually every dog attack is labeled pit bull attack--even if the only resemblance the prepetrator has to a pit bull is four legs and big teeth. The publicity has caused a public outcry from citizens who are convinced that these killer dogs need to be purged from society. Legislators have been quick to jump on the bandwagon, and beed-specific ordinances banning pit bulls have been passed in certain communities. As these bans have begun to include other dog breeds many dog lovers have joined pit bull fanciers in urging that breed-specific legislationis not only unfair, but it is less effective than laws that target irresponsible dog owner or vicious dogs in general regardless of breed. Most breed-specifi legislation has been replealed, but the struggle continues today. The struggle is brought home whenever a pit bull trots politely alongside his owner only to be met by parents who grab their children and scurry away. Pit bull owners face a daily challenge from people who label the dogs as vcious on sight, and insurance companies that refuse to cover owners of pit bulls. **People listen to the media as though they are speaking the truth. People who do that are fools, and had better learn to question what they hear on tv and in the newspaper. They have you all on short little leashes.
