(Bellingham Herald, November 14, 2014) According to an October survey from FRAC, 86 percent of voting-age Americans believe no one in America should go hungry, and two in five Americans have either experienced hunger in the past year, or know someone who has experienced hunger. A majority of those polled also believe that resolving hunger will take both government and charity efforts. Yet, “[p]artisan bickering stands in the way of hunger relief, despite substantial bipartisan support among voters and a personal connection to many” in Washington state, notes this op-ed. Washington state is one of three states experiencing growth in poverty, and SNAP cuts in the state, starting November 1, mean a loss of up to $90 a month in food assistance for about 200,000 Washington households. This op-ed urges “state legislators to protect the fragile safety net of programs that help families in need,” and notes that “Northwest Harvest and Nutrition First urge our newly elected and returning members of Congress to strengthen programs like SNAP, WIC and the child nutrition programs that provide healthy meals to children where they live, go to school and play.”
