Berean Hour: Daily Reflection by Rev Dr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, Ghana Baptist University College. 3 March 2014 The Lord is My Shepherd – Part 1 Psalm 23 Life is full of troubles and trials; each day comes with its struggles and battles. So we all need directions, guidance, protection and wellbeing. Thus, we need a shepherd; someone who knows the way to a better life. David, the author of this psalm, found himself in our situation. The Bible tells of some bitter experiences of David. A remarkable example is king Saul’s antagonistic attitude toward him. In spite of his problems, David attained a higher height and had rest, because of what God meant to him. He found God as his shepherd in life. Today, I want to entreat you to seek God, the Shepherd-King. David knew the importance of a shepherd in one’s life. He was a shepherd-boy in his father’s house. He tended his father’s flock. Elsewhere, he testifies that once he protected the flock from a predator. David knew the role and responsibilities of a shepherd. Psalm 23 illustrates David’s perception about God. David identified God as a shepherd. In the ancient Near East, shepherd is a metaphor for kings. In Psalm 23, David acknowledges that the Lord is his Shepherd-King. He did not only identify God as shepherd, but also as his shepherd. The pronoun my suggests that David had a personal relationship with God. Because God was his shepherd, David processed a joyful trust in him, “I shall not want.” A sheep moves about in the desert with full trust in its shepherd. A sheep trusts the shepherd to feed, lead, direct, and protect it. Do you have God as you personal shepherd? Life can be bitter for you if you are a sheep without a shepherd. In John 10:11, 14, we read that Jesus is the shepherd of those who come to him. If you do not have Jesus in your life begin to think about it. You better invite him into you life. The most important thing in life is to have a personal relationship with God. If you have Jesus, you can boldly say with David, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Friend, you cannot travel through life comfortably without the great and perfect Shepherd. You cannot change life’s problems with their accompanied effects. But you can decide the course to take to avoid many of such problems. Let Jesus be your shepherd to lead you. God bless you.
