Best weekend of polocrosse! Casterton Polocrosse Club had a successful first tournament of the season on the 10th and 11th of January. The Oakbank tournament was hosted at the Hynam polocrosse grounds where Casterton took out the A Grade, B Grade, C Grade and D Grade finals and a number of players receiving best player awards. Casterton sent four sides along with four players who played in a pool side made up from different clubs. In the D Grade the side consisted of new players James Harvey, Hamish Harrington and Kate Smith along with the old guard of Felicity (Floss) Gillon, Molly Dennis and Annabel Michelmore. Playing Oakbank in the final they were victorious after losing during the round robin. James Harvey won best number 1 in his first weekend and Molly Dennis winning best number 3. Laura Mitchelmore also played in the D grade as a pool player, and battled hard for her team. The C Grade side included Velia Hartley who has returned to us from a brief venture into South Australia as well as Emily Mitchelmore, Robert Plush, Bruce (Gringo) Caulfield, Erin Powell and Sarah Harvey who is another player returning to us this year. Although they failed to make the finals, all had a fun weekend. Also in the C grade, Robert and Angus Pilmore and David Dennis flew the flag for Casterton quite successfully, winning as part of a pool side. Robert Pilmore was awarded best number 2, and David Dennis as the best number 3. The B grade side was a mix of youth and experience with Geordie Tait, Graeme Steff, Jan Allen, Dillan Carlin, Darren (Boof) Carlin and Hamish Carlin. Getting off to a slow start to the weekend by losing their first game, they got their act together and went on to win the final against the Yorke Peninsula team by 20 goals. Geordie Tait was recognised as the best number 1 in B Grade, along side Graeme Steff as best number 2. The A grade side was also successful; Kelly Allen, Rick Smith, Samantha Allen, Trent Edney, Scott Creek and Queensland exchange player Joel Dunstan defeating Sale in a tight final. The weekend was then followed by a three day coaching clinic run by well recognised Western Australian coach Danny Polain. The week also included a shoeing and dentistry demonstration for the benefit of all involved players. The coaching clinic then ran into this weekends’ tournament also hosted at the Hynam polocrosse grounds. It was fairly successful for the Casterton Polocrosse Club, with three of the four competing teams making finals. Unfortunately D grade did not make the finals, but C, B and A grade did. The D Grade side was made up of Molly Dennis, Annabel Mitchelmore, Laura Mitchelmore, Emily Mitchelmore, Floss and Hamish Harrington, as well as Kate Smith, Erin Powel and Skye McIntosh playing in a pool team with Corio. Neither teams made the finals but they all enjoyed their weekend. The C Grade team consisted of Bruce Caulfield (Gringo), Emma Gersch, David Dennis, Velia Hartley, Jodie Jolly and captain Robert Plush. They all played hard and came out with a convincing win against Naracoorte. Bruce Caulfield also had a bit of a win taking out best number 1 and best horse on his mare Stella, while Emma Gersch received best number 2. The B grade side were dominant on the field doubling the oppositions score, winning 24 to 12 Casterton’s way against Adelaide with captain Rick Smith, Jan Allen, Tony Astbury, Geordie Tait, Dillan Carlin and Darren Carlin. On the Saturday all round games were won, proving themselves worthy for finals. Geordie Tait took out best number 1 and best number 3 was awarded to young Dillan Carlin. A Grade played hard throughout Saturday, qualifying for the Semi-finals on Sunday morning. After winning the Semi-final, they qualified to play in the final against Sale. After a tight game, within the last 30 seconds of play, Sale managed to throw the winning goal, with the scores finishing at 16 to 17 leaving Sale with a victory. Casterton played hard all game never losing spirit. Hamish Carlin was awarded the Best Number 2 despite their loss. Overall everybody enjoyed a fantastic weekend of Polocrosse, with some victories and some losses on and off the field. Next weekend’s Corio tournament is being held at the Portland polocrosse grounds.
