Bizarre afternoon. I was driving today on I-271 south today in Cleveland, when I saw some chunks of concrete strewn on the pavement directly under an overpass. Obviously an old bridge was starting to buckle -- chunks falling off. Luckily no one was hurt. Or so I thought. About 200 yards up ahead, a car was pulled off the to the side of the road, so I pulled off to see if they were OK, guessing they were impacted by the falling concrete.. They were. A huge chunk of concrete fell onto, then INTO this womans car. She thinks she broke her wrist blocking this chunk -- the size of a large phone book -- from hitting her daughter squarely in the face. The windshield was shattered, and she was shaken. I hung around until the cops showed up -- but thank god it wasnt an elderly driver -- and that the concrete hit on the passenger side. ODOT has such little confidence in the bridge, theyve shut down 2 lanes under the structure until tomorrow morning as their crews investigate.
